Native American Inspired Figures
Two other favorite sculptures are Coyote Man and The Shaman, both of which make reference to my anthropological fieldwork in the American Southwest. The shaman, practically a Jungean archetype, incorporates a deer’s skull, epoxy resin, rafia, snake bone and glass eyes. There’s a story to how I came by the eyes and skull, but you have to read all the way through this page to find it.
Coyote Man is a mythological Native America figure in the southwest. He’s a trickster, a wily and malevolent creature, one who causes endless problems for himself and others. During my academic career, I became collected dozens of folk tales in which he was the major figure.
My representation of Old Man Coyote is made from rebar, snake bone, dog’s skull, epoxy resin, feathers, glass eyes.
Thus began our “Folk Art “ period.
